The good news is that with Linux Mint, it seems to be now easier than ever to get one working at least via the USB link. The largest UK shopping mall retailer of stationery-related items for general consumers, W H Smith, have been selling the HP 3050, and the non-wireless alternative, the HP 1050, in the 2011 academic holidays very much targeted at students about to return to college - the very people likely to buy one and run into the problems described.

Not only that but my old scanner had no support from Linux or Windows! (no Win 7 drivers it was so old) so we couldn't use that at all. Previously my wife and I had to share a usb cable plugging it into whichever machine we wanted to print from. So now I can print and scan wirelessly, although I wouldn't say it was a particularly user friendly setup process!ДЄs for the device itself, it is quite compact, and seems to work well, although it is a bit noisy - particularly the scanner, and the ink cartridges are minute, about a quarter of the size of the ones in my old printer, I can't imagine them lasting very long.Д®ven despite the hassle setting it up, the wireless nature of the printer is a real boon. With this in place the hplip utility finally recognised the existence of the printer and I was able to use all of the functions contained within that software. (the previous information in there was the uri from the usb connection - further evidence if any were needed that there was nothing wrong with the cable or connection). As the hp utility refused to work I switched to using the built in gnome printer utility (control center/printing) and added the following under settings/location:Дevice_uri='hp:/net/Deskjet_3050_J610_series?ip=192.168.0.7' Again this is done with the hp-setup utility, and still it would not believe that my usb cable was connected (I tried several different ports - all the same). The device is quite clever in that it tells you what ip address it is using on the lcd screen so what you have to do now is to transfer this to the Linux machine that wants to connect to it. I don't think I would have been able to proceed further without this (although I could have used it through the USB cable of course).

Luckily for me I suppose, my wife still insists on using Windows, so adding the supplied software to her computer resulted in an automatic transfer of our router data to the machine. Perhaps there is some way to manually enter this information into the device without the hp-setup utility, but if there is then I couldn't find it. This was a completely spurious warning - I could even print perfect test pages through the usb cable so there was no connection problem, but the warning allows you to proceed no further, effectively leaving me stranded. Unfortunately for me the utility detected the printer with no trouble at all, but repeatedly told me that there was an 'I/O problem - check your USB connection'. You begin this process by temporarily connecting a usb cable to the device. This should be accomplished by the hp-setup utility that comes with hplip. What you have to achieve to get this device working (wirelessly at least) is to pass your router ssid and password to the device software (and add the device mac address to your routers hardware access list if you use such a thing). I tried the link given by Fandangio, but unfortunately it didn't work at all for me. I have just purchased and installed one of these machines so I thought I would add my experiences for anyone else that might need a bit of help.

However I then got a message that command could not be carried out.Дo I presume from this that I cannot run the automatic installer and will have to install it manually, or is there a way round this. I noticed that the driver included with Mint 10 is HPLIP 3.10.6 whilst the latest version which according to HP supports the 3050 is 3.10.9. I installed SANE but that program does not recognise it and neither does SimpleScan. However though it prints OK it will not scan. It installed OK and though the 3050 was not shown on the printer list I selected the 2050 and it installed. I have recently acquired an HP Deskjet 3050 J610 series all in one printer.
